DOE Ruling Affects Single Package Vertical Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps

DOE Ruling Affects Single Package Vertical Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps

On January 6, 2023, the Department of Energy (DOE) published a final rule to amend test procedures for single package vertical air conditioners and single package vertical heat pumps.

Capacity: 3/4 – 2.5 ton

SEER2 Test Procedure: 0.30 ESP

HSPF Test Procedure: 0.30 ESP

As a result of final rule, DOE established definitions for “single-phase single package vertical air conditioners with cooling capacity less than 65,000 Btu/h” and for “single-phase single package vertical heat pumps with cooling capacity less than 65,000 Btu/h.”

Prior to this ruling, single package vertical units were considered commercial products listed as EER and COP. In 2023, any SPVU models that are single-phase with a cooling capacity less than 65,000 Btu/h are now considered by DOE to be Central Air Conditioners (CACs).  Thus, all Eco-Series models had to be removed from the AHRI SPVU Directory and were added to the Space Constrained Air Conditioner & Heat Pump, Single-Package, Air-Cooled Directory.
